Best time to visit Tabarca Island

Over 50 years operating this route gives us a certain perspective. This is what we tell people who ask.

🌅 The first ferry is the best moment

The 10:00 boat arrives when the island is still peaceful. The coves are pristine, the water sparkles and you have the whole morning ahead. Travelling with children? Even better — morning snorkelling in the Marine Reserve is spectacular.

📅 May, June & September — the hidden gem window

Same ferries, same price, 40–60% fewer visitors than August. The Mediterranean is already warm for swimming from May and the experience is incomparably more relaxed. Repeat visitors almost always choose these months.

☀️ July & August: beautiful but very busy

The island in summer is spectacular, but August weekends are the most crowded of the year. Book online in advance and take the first boat. If possible, choose Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday — the difference is remarkable.

📆 Weekdays are always much quieter

A Tuesday or Wednesday in peak season is radically different from a Saturday. If you have flexibility, choose weekdays. The island has only 80 permanent residents — crowd levels make a huge difference to the experience.

Schedules, tickets and how to make the most of your day on the island.

How many daily ferries run from Santa Pola to Tabarca Island?+
During the season (2 March to 31 October) there are 10 daily departures from Santa Pola: at 10:00, 10:45, 11:30, 12:00, 12:30, 13:00, 14:00, 15:30, 17:00 and 18:30. From Tabarca Island there are also 9 return crossings, with the last boat at 19:15.
Do I need to book a specific departure time?+
No. Your ticket is completely flexible — you can board any available crossing throughout the day, both outbound and return. You don't choose a time when you book. If you want to stay on the island longer than planned, simply catch the next return ferry at no extra charge.
How long is the ferry crossing from Santa Pola to Tabarca?+
The direct crossing takes 25 minutes. Add to that a stop at the Tabarca Marine Reserve to view the seabed through the catamaran's glass-bottom panels — total journey time is around 35–40 minutes port to port.
What time is the last return ferry from Tabarca Island?+
The last return ferry from Tabarca Island departs at 19:15. We recommend being at the island's dock 10–15 minutes early, especially in August when the boats are busiest.
What is the best time to take the ferry to Tabarca?+
For families with children or anyone wanting a quieter experience, the 10:00 or 10:45 crossing is the best choice — you arrive while the island is still calm and cool. In summer this also helps you avoid the mid-morning crowds. September is our personal favourite month: same schedule, far fewer visitors.
Does the Tabarca ferry run every day, including weekends and bank holidays?+
Yes. Throughout the full season (2 March to 31 October) the service operates every single day — Saturdays, Sundays and all national and local public holidays included.
What happens if there is bad weather?+
We sail whenever sea conditions allow. In the event of weather preventing navigation, we contact all passengers with online bookings and arrange a change of date or a full refund. If you are unsure about conditions on your travel day, call us on 623 526 591.
Can I buy Tabarca ferry tickets on the day at the port?+
Yes, walk-up tickets are available at the booth on the day. That said, in July and August ferries fill quickly and queues are common. Booking online saves you 3€ per adult (9€ vs 12€ at the booth) and guarantees your place.
How far in advance should I book the Tabarca ferry?+
It depends on the time of year. In May, June and September you can easily book the same day. In July and August, especially at weekends, we recommend booking at least 2–3 days in advance to be sure of your spot.
Can I bring my dog on the ferry to Tabarca?+
Absolutely. Pets travel completely free on our ferries — dogs, cats and other pets are all welcome with no size or breed restrictions. No ticket needed for them. Full pet policy here.
Is the underwater glass-bottom viewing included in the ticket price?+
Yes, 100% included at no extra cost. The stop at the Tabarca Natural Marine Reserve — where you view the Mediterranean seabed through the catamaran's glass-bottom panels — is part of every single crossing. It's consistently one of the most-mentioned highlights in our passenger reviews.
How long should I spend on Tabarca Island?+
4–5 hours is plenty of time to swim, have lunch and explore the island on foot. Take the 10:00 ferry and you can return on the 15:30 or 17:00 crossing and still have a full, relaxed day. Those who want to catch the evening light have the 19:15 as their final return option.
